What Are Abjad Numerals?

Long before modern Arabic numerals were used for counting, this letter-based system was the standard way to write numbers, and it is still used today for a calculation called "jummal" in Arabic literature and folklore.

What Is the Abjad Value?

The Abjad value of a word or phrase is the sum of the numeric values of each of its Arabic letters, based on the Abjad table. For example, the word "باب" (bab) equals 2 + 1 + 2 = 5. This calculation is traditionally used to derive a symbolic meaning or a commemorative date from a phrase's letters.

What Is the Abjad Value of the Hamza Letter?

The hamza (ء) is not one of the 28 letters in the traditional Abjad order, so it has no universally agreed value. Common practice treats a standalone hamza as equal to alif (1) if it is counted, or as zero if it is ignored. A hamza that sits on a carrier letter (أ, إ, ؤ, ئ) is counted as its carrier letter instead, alif, waw, or ya.
