What Is the Word Counter?

Word Counter is a free tool that counts the words in any text the moment you type or paste it. It also shows the character count, with and without spaces, so you get a complete picture of your text's length without switching tools.

How It Works

The tool splits your text wherever there's a space and counts the resulting groups of characters as words. Extra spaces at the start, end, or between words are ignored automatically, so the count reflects the words you actually wrote, not incidental formatting.

When to Use a Word Counter

Essays and Assignments

Many academic assignments set a minimum or maximum word count. Pasting a draft into the Word Counter lets you check your progress against that target without waiting until you're done writing.

Articles and Blog Posts

A shorter target word count usually signals a quick read, while longer counts suit in-depth guides. Tracking your running total as you write helps you match the length you're aiming for.

Speeches and Scripts

As a rough guide, people speak at about 130–150 words per minute. Checking your script's word count gives you a quick estimate of how long it will take to deliver out loud.

A Practical Example

If your assignment requires at least 800 words and the Word Counter shows 640, you know you need roughly 160 more words before submitting — no manual counting required.

Why Use TheTextCounter's Word Counter

It's free, requires no account, and never sends your text to a server — everything is calculated locally in your browser as you type. There's nothing to configure and nothing standing between you and your word count.
